The panic has a documented history, and knowing it changes how you read everything written about this today.
Anti-masturbation anxiety was consolidated in the early eighteenth century by an anonymous English tract, Onania, and by Tissot's L'Onanisme a few decades later. Onania's date and authorship are contested; what is not contested is that its publisher also sold the remedy. Tissot popularised the claim that semen was worth many times its volume in blood, an idea traced back to Avicenna around 1027. Historians still argue over whether this was a genuine rupture or a repackaging of older anxieties.
The nineteenth century turned anxiety into treatment: genital surgery on children, restraint devices, and dietary regimes. Kellogg and Graham prescribed plain, deliberately unstimulating diets to suppress masturbation. The oft-repeated line that corn flakes were invented for that purpose is not supported by the record; the diet-and-chastity argument is.
Read the current moment through that lens and the shape is familiar: a real social change, streaming video; a confident biology, the dopamine story; dramatic claims; and a market of apps, blockers, coaching and supplements with a financial incentive favouring the addiction framing. That incentive applies to this one too. It is a paid product.
None of this means your concern is invented. It means the burden of proof sits with the confident claim, on both sides, and the filter is worth taking with you.

- Mixed evidenceAnti-masturbation anxiety was consolidated by the anonymous English tract Onania and by Tissot's L'Onanisme (French 1760, Latin 1758). Onania's date is contested: commonly given as c.1712, argued by Stolberg to be 1716, with recent estimates spanning 1708-1716 and the earliest surviving copy the 4th edition of 1718. Its authorship is unknown. Tissot popularised the claim that semen was worth many times its volume in blood but did not originate it: his 1758 Latin credits Galen and gives half an ounce, and the 1760 French drops Galen for "the physicians of all ages". The ratio has been traced to Avicenna (c.1027), reaching Europe via Michael Scot's Latin translation (c.1215). Historians dispute whether Onania marks a genuine rupture (Laqueur) or repackages anxieties already present in earlier theological and medical discourse (Stolberg).Stolberg 2000, J History of Sexuality 9(1/2); Janssen 2025, J Psychosexual Health 7(2):187-191, for the ratio's transmission; Laqueur, Solitary Sex. - Mixed evidenceJohn Harvey Kellogg prescribed a plain, deliberately unstimulating grain diet as one of several treatments meant to suppress masturbation (Plain Facts about Sexual Life, 1877, pp. 311-13: "Graham flour, oatmeal, and ripe fruit are indispensables of a dietary for those who are suffering from sexual excesses"), and Sylvester Graham had made the same diet-and-chastity argument in 1834. That much is well established. The further claim that this campaigning motivated the invention of corn flakes is NOT supported: flaked cereal was developed at the sanitarium in 1894 and patented in 1896 as an easily digested food "particularly well adapted for sick and convalescent persons", corn flakes specifically followed in 1898, and no edition of Plain Facts examined (1877, 1881, 1910) mentions them. Graham likewise promoted graham flour and bread, not the branded cracker, which Nabisco mass-produced in 1898, 47 years after his death.Kellogg, Plain Facts about Sexual Life, Battle Creek 1877, pp. 233ff., 311-13 (the title Plain Facts for Old and Young, which this register used to pair with 1877, first appears in 1881); US Patent…
