"Alcohol lowers your inhibitions, so you relapse" sounds like a sentence with a study behind it. Half of it has one. The half about alcohol is well measured; the half about pornography has never been looked at.
What alcohol has been shown to do
Acute alcohol impairs the ability to withhold a response that is already prepared. Across human laboratory studies the effect is g = 0.41, larger at higher breath alcohol concentrations and larger when the task has first trained the response you then have to stop. Separately, across 30 experimental studies, drinking raised people's stated intentions to have unprotected sex — d = 0.24 to 0.35 — and the effect was bigger when sexual arousal was already high.
The usual explanation is alcohol myopia: intoxication narrows attention onto whatever cue is nearest, so the immediate thing wins against the distant consequence. That is the leading account of those findings rather than a finding of its own, and alcohol expectancy — what you believe drink does to you — remains a live rival explanation.
Notice what the outcomes actually are. One is a reaction-time task in a laboratory. The other is a rating of what someone says they would do, about partnered sex. Neither measures a sexual urge, and neither measures any solitary behaviour at all.
What has been tested on pornography
Nothing proximal. A scoping review searching four databases to December 2024 screened 949 references and found eight eligible studies, every one of them cross-sectional. Alcohol was the most frequently studied substance and was positively but weakly associated with problematic use — and in the study that adjusted for age and gender, the association did not survive the adjustment.
The nearest thing to a real-time test is a fourteen-day daily study of 113 men, 1,240 observations. Baseline alcohol problems predicted neither how much pornography the men used nor how much trouble they had controlling it. The correlation between problematic use and alcohol problems was 0.08; with depression it was 0.29. That is a null. It is also, strictly, the wrong test for this question — it asks whether people with drink problems use more, not whether tonight's drink raises tonight's urge, and nobody has run that one.
The trigger list nobody put drink on
The one systematic catalogue of what people trying to stop say triggers them comes from the analysis of 104 abstinence journals. The external cues it records are electronic media and social feeds, seeing attractive people in real life, and being alone in your bedroom; the internal cues are chiefly negative affective states. Alcohol is not on the list. It appears once in the entire paper, in a table of demographics, as a self-perceived co-occurring addiction reported by one member out of 104.
That absence is the most useful thing on this page. A trigger claim that turns up in no experiment and in no catalogue of self-reports is an assertion, however often it gets repeated.
What to do with that
Take your own pattern seriously anyway. If you have noticed that drinking is when it happens for you, that is a fact about you and it does not need a study's permission. It is just not a general finding.
The reason to settle it in advance rather than at the time is separately established: intentions on their own translate weakly into behaviour. Increasing the friction of a behaviour — moving the cue further away, breaking the sequence that leads to it — does reduce how often it occurs, though that evidence is graded low-certainty and comes mostly from short laboratory studies of food.
Be careful with the mechanism story, because it is the part that sounds most like knowledge. The four-part loop taught everywhere — cue, craving, behaviour, relief — is a teaching model from popular behaviour-change writing rather than a finding, and whether a craving is even a necessary stage in it is the contested part. "I drank, so my brake was off, so it was always going to happen" is that model plus a laboratory reaction-time result, stretched across a gap nobody has measured.
