Does porn fry your dopamine receptors?

No. The real part of the dopamine story is that dopamine is more about wanting a reward than enjoying it, which is why urges feel urgent and the experience can feel flat. The "fried receptors", fixed rewiring timelines and detox weekends are folk theory that hardened into fact through repetition. Whether compulsive porn use resembles substance addiction in the brain is genuinely unresolved.

Well established

You will meet a version of this: porn floods the brain with unnaturally high dopamine, burns out the receptors, and leaves nothing normal feeling good. Some of that has a kernel in real neuroscience. Most of it is a folk theory.

Reasonably supported. Dopamine is centrally involved in wanting rather than liking: in the anticipation and pursuit of a reward rather than the pleasure of getting it. That is why an urge can feel overwhelming and the actual experience can feel flat, and why endless novelty and scrolling are compelling. The search is the reward.

Not supported. That porn "fries" or "burns out" receptors. That there is a fixed timeline for "rewiring". That a detox weekend "resets" anything. That escalation to more extreme content is universal or inevitable; some people report it, many do not, and habituation is a normal feature of every repeated pleasure, including music and food.

Genuinely unsettled. Whether the brain patterns seen in compulsive porn use match substance addiction. Some imaging studies find similarities; others fail to replicate, or find the pattern better explained by high sexual desire. The researchers disagree in print.

Why this matters: the "your brain is damaged" framing is motivating for about a fortnight and corrosive after that. It converts a behaviour you can change into an injury you have to heal, and it makes every slip feel like neurological evidence against you. You do not need a broken-brain story to change something that is costing you. The cost is the reason.
