Forget brain scans for a second. The most useful model here is simpler, and it is a teaching tool rather than a research finding: cue → craving → behaviour → relief. The science underneath it is narrower than the diagram suggests — habits are built by repeating a response in a stable context, and whether a craving has to sit in the middle is exactly the part researchers still argue about. As a place to look in your own week, though, the four steps are the right four.
A cue is anything your brain has learned reliably precedes the behaviour. It's almost never "seeing something sexy". Far more often it's: being alone in a specific room, a specific time of night, a specific level of tiredness, having just been rejected or criticised, boredom with a particular texture to it, the moment your partner falls asleep, opening a laptop after a certain hour, or a feeling you don't have another handle for.
The craving is what the cue produces — a state, not a decision.
The behaviour follows, and the relief is real. This is the important bit. Something is genuinely being solved: the loneliness recedes, the anxiety quiets, the boredom breaks, the day ends. The loop persists because it works. Every time it works, the link gets a little stronger.
Which means the honest question isn't "how do I stop wanting this". It's "what is this doing for me, and what else could do that?" A loop that's solving a real problem doesn't get deleted by willpower. It gets outcompeted, or the underlying problem gets solved.
