Why do porn urges feel so strong when the experience is so flat?

Because dopamine is about wanting, not liking. It drives the anticipation and pursuit of a reward far more than the pleasure of having it, so the urge can feel urgent while the thing itself feels hollow. That gap is not a sign of damage. It is how wanting works, and it is the reason the search is so much more compelling than the finding.

Well established

The mismatch people describe, an urge that feels like the most important thing in the world followed by an experience that barely registers, is one of the best-understood parts of this whole subject.

Dopamine is more closely associated with the anticipation and pursuit of a reward than with the pleasure of consuming it. Wanting and liking are separable systems, and porn, with its endless novelty, is almost purely a wanting machine: the scrolling, the searching, the next tab. The reward is the chase, which is why the chase can go on for an hour and end in something flat.

This is useful to know for two reasons. First, the flatness is not evidence that something is broken; it is the predictable signature of a behaviour driven by wanting. Second, an urge is a wave of wanting, and waves pass. It rises, peaks and subsides on its own if it is neither fought nor fed.

The practical move follows. You cannot make yourself want it less by force; suppression rebounds. What you can do is notice that the urgency is the anticipation talking, let the wave crest, and put something physical in the gap.
