How long does an urge last, and what do I do while it lasts?

Nobody has measured it, and this page is not going to invent a figure for you. The durations in circulation have no study behind them, and the question itself is part of the trap, because waiting for a deadline is harder than waiting without one. What has been measured is that the link between an urge and what you do about it can loosen while the urge itself stays exactly the same size.

Well established

Every version of this question is a request for a deadline. If somebody gives you a number, you can hold on until it. The difficulty is that the number does not exist, and hunting for it keeps you checking the clock — which is its own way of staying engaged with the thing you are trying not to engage with.

So, plainly: no duration has been established for an urge of this kind. Not in this population, not in the research that urge-based techniques come from. Any figure you have been handed — a time to peak, a half-life, a rule of thumb for how long they run — was passed along rather than measured, and this page will not add another one to the pile.

What has actually been measured

One randomised study, and it is worth knowing precisely what it found. 123 undergraduate smokers went through a cue-exposure procedure; half were given brief urge-surfing instructions. The instructions produced no significant reduction in reported urges at all. They did produce significantly less smoking over the following seven days. The authors call it preliminary data, it is one small study in students, and it is not about pornography — but the result is the one that matters here: the urge stayed the size it was, and the behaviour changed anyway.

That is why duration is the wrong variable to chase. What moved in that study was not how long anything lasted. It was whether it had to be followed.

The other measured thing is what not to do. Suppressing sexual thoughts produces a rebound — the thoughts increase. "Just don't think about it until it passes" is the one strategy that has been tested and found to work backwards.

What to do while it lasts

The technique itself has its own page, linked below, so this is the part specific to the waiting.

The only duration data anyone will ever have about your urges is yours. Watching one through to the end is worth doing, not to establish a number, but because "this will keep rising until I act" is a belief, and sitting with one is the only way it ever gets tested.
