Social support genuinely helps. The analysis of abstinence journals identified it as one of the two ingredients that made abstinence attainable, alongside practical strategies. Don't skip this because it's uncomfortable.
But the form matters, and here's the uncomfortable part: some of the biggest online communities in this space have documented downsides. Researchers who surveyed men in reboot communities found the streak-and-relapse framing was associated with shame, worthlessness and, for a minority, thoughts of suicide following a perceived failure. The same research and related journalism documented forum cultures with misogyny and conspiratorial content — including recruitment activity by extremist groups — that has nothing to do with anyone's recovery.
None of that means those communities help nobody. Plenty of people credit them, and the core insight — that other people going through the same thing helps enormously — is sound. It means choose deliberately.
Signs of accountability that helps: asks how it's going without a verdict attached. Interested in your patterns, not your streak. Doesn't perform disappointment. Comfortable with the idea that you might redefine the goal. Focused on your life getting better rather than a number going up.
Signs to walk away: a slip triggers a pile-on or performative disappointment. Confident biological claims with no evidence behind them. Talk about porn drifts into talk about women, or Jews, or a plot. Streak length is the status currency. Anyone selling a programme.
The best version, for most people, is one or two individuals who know and don't judge. That's harder to arrange than joining a forum and worth much more.
