Do accountability partners help you quit porn?

One or two people who don't perform disappointment help. Social support was one of the two things that made abstinence feel attainable in the journal research, alongside cognitive-behavioural strategies. Forums are a different matter: the same research documents cultures hostile in ways unrelated to recovery, and streak-as-status is a sign to walk away.

Anecdotal Well established

The evidence for support is real but modest in kind. A qualitative analysis of 104 rebooting journals found abstinence felt impossible at first and became attainable with two things: cognitive-behavioural strategies and social support. That is self-report, and third variables were not ruled out, so hold it as a consistent pattern rather than a proven mechanism.

The evidence about where people get that support is sharper. A preregistered survey of 587 men in reboot communities found perceived relapse commonly followed by shame, worthlessness and sadness, and documented forum cultures that were hostile in ways that had nothing to do with recovery. Some of those spaces have also been partly co-opted by far-right and conspiratorial movements. If the talk slides toward who is responsible for your problem, you are not in a recovery space any more.

So the useful shape is small and specific. One or two people who will not perform disappointment when you tell them about a slip, because accountability that performs disappointment is a reason to hide the next one. Shame is a concealment emotion; the whole point of a person is to make concealment unnecessary.

Anonymous accountability is weaker than a person. Worth knowing; not worth stalling on. If a person is not available yet, a room where nobody can find you is better than a forum that keeps score.
